If what we see of her is any indication, Pam herself grew up in an abusive home. So in order to figure out why Pam turned out the way she did, we're going to need to do some educated guessing. It's a little hard to get a feel for Pam's character outside of "abusive alcoholic", since we really don't get much information about Pam at all. In order to understand Penny's character, however, we need to look at Pam. Penny is stuck in a cycle of abuse, and she needs someone to help her break out of it. Certainly, Penny is in a bad situation and is in desperate need to be rescued, and this is a major attraction for many players who want to be the Knight In Shining Armor. Her mother is Pam, an abusive alcoholic who lives together with Penny in a cramped trailer. On the surface, a shy, unassuming woman, very conservative in appearance and demeanor, very fond of kids, and a fondness for poppies. Bear in mind, this is my opinion and can certainly be open to debate, and I'm not a professional head shrink or anything. So I'm thinking to do a series on each of the bachelors/bachelorettes in Stardew Valley, and really get into what drives each one.
